Angel of the North
The last text message reads "Have you got the new Simple Minds album yet?" 08th Oct 2019
Last time I saw Paul Nowak (a once active and prevalent member here) was JAE 2011 at Wicksteed Park but we'd remained in touch ever since.
His daughter messaged me last week to sadly say he'd passed away on Friday after suddenly taking ill at work. He was just 48 years old.
My memories of Paul date back to JAE 2007 where we learnt of our joint mutual appreciation of early 80s music.
He joined our JAE planning and set up team for 2008 where we had what remains our most successfully attended MR2OC event (if memory serves - over 100 MR2s on our stand which won the best stand at JAE that year at Mersea Island)
We convoyed together in our MR2s to both MR2 'world record' attempts - firstly at Rockingham and latterly at Silverstone.
Paul had a wicked dry sense of humour and was expertly able to convey a sharp wit that will be sadly missed.
He was building a 'pub' in his garden and sent me many pictures of the progress - he had various instruments (drunkenly purchased on eBay) that he'd promised he'd teach himself to play and constantly badgered me to cover U2's 11 'O clock tick tock on my keyboard and upload to my YouTube channel - (a promise I shall keep)
He had a mint silver MR2 anni, one of the best I'd ever seen in these circles and if a car suits someone - the anni was definitely a PN car.
He loved driving it, he looked cool driving it - his flowing unruly blonde hair - his Rayban sunglasses - Depeche Mode blasting from his stereo - his Spirited Driving... he was the definition of what this MR2OC was about back in its day.
He was lovely - I will miss his late night texts - asking me how to take a screen shot on his new iPhone because F******g Apple have removed the C***ng home button !
And now he's driving along his own Route 66 - listening to U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Human League - his playlist will be envy of all the angels.
RIP big fella from The North, much love until we meet again.
VC
P.S. I have now ordered the latest Simple Minds album

Re: Angel of the North
such sad news, really was a nice guy
Not Plan B again!! Why don't we just go with plan B in the first place?

I'm shocked, only 48. I'll miss Paul he was a really nice guy, I was fortunate enough to meet him a couple of times at JAE.

Re: Angel of the North
A truely lovely chap... I had many a conversation with him in the early years of the OC at the various mutually attended events
Such a sad loss to both his family and friends, at 48 is no age at all... R.I.P. Paul
