17 inch wheels OK on a MK2?

Post by Sultanoftippoo »

Apologies if this has been covered before but as a new member (and proud owner of a MK2 T-Bar), I’d really appreciate some guidance on how easy it is to fit 17 inch wheels (ie: direct fit without having to change anything) and if no mods are needed what is a good premium tyre choice (brand and sizes)? - I’ve seen a nice set of JR5’s so wondered if anyone has any experience with these.

I’ll be using the car as a daily driver with the occasional Track day in the summer.

Cheers

check out know your 2, loads of good info for the mk2.

my preference is 17" wheels. had standard 15s and also set of 16s
had 3 different sets of 17" wheels
17 x 7" ET40 with 15mm hubcentric spacers on rears 215/40/17 and 235/40/17 (rears are 5mm oversize for 7" rims)
17x7.5" ET40 with 15mm spacer and tyres as above but tyres are perfect fit for 7.5" rims.
17x8 ET32 with 215/40/17 front and 17x9 ET35 with 245/40/17 rears
all above fit with standard or coilover suspension.

Many thanks for this info Pete (first time I’ve looked at aftermarket wheels hence the dumb questions).

The JR5 wheels I was looking at were 17x8.5 (fronts) and 17x9.5 (rears) so not sure they would fit without Suspension mods so I like the options you provided by only needing spacers.

you need to know the offest as well. personally think 8.5 fronts will be too wide

use this to show you how different the wheels looking at are to ones you have on

I bought wheels from someone in the club.(Bob Rowell). 16*6.5* 38 o/s front, 17*7.5*37 o/s rear. Hankook V12 Evo2 tyres, 205/45/16 front and 225/35/17 rear. Grip very well, ride surprisingly well, and look good. You could fit a 235 at the rear OK.

The club guide on wheels and tyres is excellent.
