Mk2 rev3 stock wheels tyre options
Hi there guys,
First post here but long time lurker
-( I've looked for topics on the subject but had no luck and figured this advice is constantly changing as tyres get discontinued anyways)
I'm about to graduate university and my side project mr2 is finally in a good state ( been working on it, replaced the clutch and fixed a bit ropey bits, etc)
Being able to properly drive my pride and joy last year, I realized that it's in desperate need of some performance tyres, as well its a bit of a present to myself
I've sold the ugly 17" wheels the car came on and picked up a set of stock 15s however I'm really not sure what I have for options with regard to tyres
Many people mention the advan ad08r but I can only find them in size to fit the fronts. Am I just being a plonker or will i have to look elseware for the rears? / heavy forbid alternative wheels
Thanks for the help in advance
Matt
p.s. here is a look at her

Re: Mk2 rev3 stock wheels tyre options
Not many options for stock wheels.
If it rarely / never sees wet usage, then the Toyo R888R is an excellent dry weather performance tyre. Downsides are relatively expensive and due to soft compound they don't last all that long like a regular road tyre.
For a more everyday tyre option, Toyo TR1 is really the only option left.

For many years I ran T1R, and they used to be pretty good, but I think the quality went off in later years.
Has anyone experience of the TR1 as a replacement?
Rainsports are well thought of, but hard to find in a suitable rear size

Try Goodyear F1 or equivalent , but it will depend on the size you want

I run Toyo R888's on the road in the wet or the dry but you wouldn't want to be using it as a daily driver as you will not get really high millage from them. Nothing else really comes close to the performance of these for the price. These do stay soft for years as well and you do need to remember that most tyres are stuffed after 6 or 8 years after the manufacturing date on the side wall of the tyre, they just go hard.

Re: Mk2 rev3 stock wheels tyre options
Hi there again, thanks for your replies guys!
I've decided to buy a fully set of new wheels and tyres( struggling to find used that have the sizes i'm looking at)
What do you think of this set-up? i'm not looking for bucket loads of rubber but just maintaining a decent staggered setup
I've heard about the car tramlining if the wheels are too wide, is this the case?
Fronts:
16"j7 et40 215/45
Rears:
17"j8 et42 245/40
The car is on stock suspension atm
I can get ado8r tyres in these sizes. The pictures below show the difference compared to stock wheels-tyres. I've gone for a chunky sidewall, do you think that i'll have issues with clearance up front?
Do you think rubber in these sizes will be around in the future?
I've also checked on: https://91mr2.com/wheel-and-tire-calculator/
I've put the results aswell for this
Thanks for you help lads!

17/245/40 are max width tyre on 8js, they will bulge and it will be mentioned at MOT time (had 235/40/17 on 7J which was max and every service, mot and RR day it was mentioned)
235/40/17 would be the best fit on those 8Js rears

Re: Mk2 rev3 stock wheels tyre options
I've had 245/40/17 on an 8inch wheel, no drama.

On my 16/6.5 fronts and 17/7.5 rears I have Hancook V12 EVO, about £300 the set, very pleased with them. 205 front and 225 rear, could go 235 rear.ADO8 is a great tyre, but was pricy.

Re: Mk2 rev3 stock wheels tyre options
The AD08 cost a fortune so what's the point just fit Toyo 888 to the stock rims your basically looking at a semi slick race tyre either way.
Never bought an aftermarket set of rims in my life your better off just spending the money on better rubber rather than nice shiny new rims and total rubbish rubber which is what most people end up doing.

Re: Mk2 rev3 stock wheels tyre options
Because in most sizes in the UK at least, AD08R's are cheaper than R888R's be quite a margin, and AD08R's perform better in the wet than R888R's.
AD08R's are not a semi slick race tyre. The Yokohama equivalent to an R888R is an A052 or A048.
