Wheel Help - Mega Brainfart Occuring

Post by 50ShadesOfRed »

Hi All,
After hibernating for the winter 50shades of red is stirring again, and will soon emerge from the garage, hungry for tarmac and b roads.

Lots of mods/tweaks have happened and more are planned for 2021, the most noticeable will be some new wheels!

I've been looking at the Japan Racing JR21 in gunmetal, but cannot for the life of me figure out if they will fit.
Before I am crucified by the community, I've used all the calculators on this site (and that I can find) etc, but still need my hand to be held it seems... :crybaby:

The specs are

Front
17 8J et33
215,40,r17

Rear
17 9J et25
245,40,r17

I have HSD coilovers fitted, so that's where the fun is coming from fitment wise.
Et35 all round would be ok without any arch work/spacers from what I've seen, but they don't supply these wheels in those specs (typical)

So.... Will they fit?
- if so the rears will look pretty meaty!

Can anyone lend a hand to a confused member please :th:

Yes, they will fit. Front wheel will be very close to the coilover, and may require some adjustment to camber at the hub knuckle to create enough clearance at the top of the wheel.

Rear is a gamble, the wheel won't protrude from the arches but the stock arches do have a ~10mm lip, which this setup may hit over bumps.

My front Lenso D1Rs on T2 are 8J ET33. Camber setting 1°20' negative.
Clearance is quite tight to the BC coilovers but I've never had any rubbing issues.
It can depend on what tyre you use. Some have a more rounded shoulder profile than others.

I would be somewhat surprised if there was no arch rubbing with ET25 rears.
Especially if the car is lowered from the stock ride height.
My 9J D1Rs are ET43 with a 5mm spacer. Camber setting 1°50' negative.
No rubbing at all and my arches are not rolled.

Any excuse for a pic. :)

Ok great - thank you both!

I really like Lenso D1r wheels, but can't find them anywhere in the right colour/sizes anymore :(
(Was a choice between those, and Rota D2 on my last MR2, went with the Rotas)

I don't really want to gamble too much with these of they aren't "right" from the outset or arch roll if I don't have to, so it's back to the drawing board for now I reckon :)

Ok.
So after some extensive googling/browsing/calculating/swearing under breath in frustration...

... I think I've cracked it 😅
Screenshot_20210326_131653.jpg
These seem to be a bit "safer" on the fit being ET35 - plus, I reckon the Matt gunmetal will work with my "interesting" paintwork quite well

Thinking of tyre sizes:
215/40/17 up front
245/40/17 in the rear

The calculator says front and rear will be 6mm in from flush, and have 12mm of clearance for the suspension (stock I guess) so camber in the rear should mean zero rubbing... If I'm thinking correctly?

Anything I haven't considered before pulling the trigger, oh wise MR2OC fellows?

These are within the recommended parameters for your chosen widths

That said, it's a good idea to keep the rolling radius as near to the original as possible.
235 rears will be better in that respect. Plug in the relevant info to Calculator 2 here. https://alloywheels.com/tyreCalculator

Great, thanks!
Takes a fair bit of apprehensiveness out of my mind about these wheels now, knowing there's a very high chance it will all fit correctly.

HOWEVER: I'm struggling to find tyres for the 235 rears, so may have to change the title to "Tyre Help - Pray For Me" now.
Tyres that match the fronts that is - OCD or what... 😅

The saga continues...

You're not trying very hard. ;)
Google is your friend...

Personally I wouldn't use mytyres.co.uk and especially right now. Some tires came mostly from Germany and if you buy it now you can get caught on custom duty.

Re Tony: indeed - The brainfart is LARGE on this one.
I think it's mostly a case of information/ analysis) overcomplicating overload from me it seems - funnily enough those are the tyres I was looking at this evening too, had good experiences with Hankook in the past 👍🏻

Re Deleted: oh, really? Wasn't aware of that, will have a good look around just in case then!

Thanks again both - pretty set on there wheels now, so 50 shades will have a new look & be ready for summertime in the very near future 😎
