Has my fuel pump gone?

Post by JonKush »

Evening all.

I have a 1997 n/a uk spec mk2 mr2 which I've owned for 10 years.

So basically the car had sat a little while but I've recently upgraded a lot and now want to enjoy it again .

I noticed firstly when starting the car I'd have to keep my foot on the throttle slightly to keep the car for dying , then after a few minutes after this the car would run fine.( it never did this before sitting )
I have went to start the car today and it done the usual hold the throttle down for a bit , but this time I didnt hold it long enough and she died , when I went to try again it just keeps turning and it wont even get to the stage of having to keep my foot on the throttle to keep her running.

So basically I'm looking for a little advice in what steps I could take to find the problem .
Also I'm not sure wether I can hear the pump prime as it where .

I can hear something after attempting to try and start her . I have a video but I'm having trouble uploading on here =(

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tia.

doubt it as it was running although badly, check the bgb for how to test the fuel pump bridging two points in the diagnosis port.

There are couple of other easy things to check

Remove and inspect the plugs. You may have flooded them. If so, get the hairdryer out (max heat setting). If the car has been idle for some time while low on fuel the filter may have picked up a load of crud from the bottom of the tank.

That's for the help guys!
I just thought it may have been an issue due to having to hold my foot on the gas for a while previous to the now non starting lol , wasnt sure if it was coincidence.

I'll have a look at the plugs and filter tomorrow and update. Thanks again guys

Holding your foot on the gas actually allows more air into engine. The fuel supplied is based on rpm.

Like others have said you can test fuel pimp by bridging two lines in diagnostic port. Probably best to look at other things first like plugs, dist cap and basic mains items.

Ok guys so a little update ;
I ran the diagnostics and it came back error code 14 ( no IGF signal to ECU)

So will my next steps to be;
Replace ignition coil and igniter?

Or could it be a relay of some sort?

Thanks in advance guys and apologies for the noob questions.

Also guys ; ive just noticed a few people mentioning the AM2 fuse may be the issue too , its a little late now for me to go back to the car , but does this seem like a likely issue? as far as i remember its a 40a fuse and much bigger than the others , is there any special way to remove this. Again sorry for the silly questions.

There's 2 AM2 fuses, 40A is bolted into the fusebox from below, the 7.5A is a normal fuse, both in the front compartment fusebox. IIRC if the 7.5A fuse is blown the engine won't dven crank over, but check,vI may be wrong. It's easy to check the fuses with a voltmeter.
