Looking at buying an MR2

Post by Tommycantdrive »

Hello MR2OC,

I'm new to MR2s and I thought that this was the best place to look for help. I'm currently looking for a MK2 MR2 and I think I've found one I'd like to take a look at, from the listing it says it runs great but has some rust issues on the sills and the driver side rear arch. There aren't loads of pictures of the rust on the listing but I've asked for some more photos and videos.

Depending on the rust I don't mind sending it off to a shop to get it repaired since it would probably be cheaper to repair this car than look for one without rust. Mainly since I've looked at insurance and some places are wanting to charge £2.5k+ but for this one they only want £1k (I'm a relatively new driver but this is cheaper than my current ford KA lol).

Do you guys have any recommendations for welding shops / MR2 specialists around Yorkshire and how much might this cost me?

Alongside this, would you recommend getting a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic on the car or just bring a big list of checks and take loads of photos?

The car is really tempting since it's got MOT till May so I'd have time to get it sorted and I don't have to get it trailered home.

Here's a link to the listing if you're interested: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/it ... 2336431679

Any and all advice is appreciated,

Tommy

The engine size in that ad is incorrect, it's a 2 litre not 1 litre. There's a buyers check list here https://mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2/mk2/mk2 ... -list.html.

The MK2 is a fantastic car and offers a lot of fun driving experience, but as you've already discovered, rust is a common issue, especially around the sills and rear wheel hub bearings arches. It's great that you're taking the time to get a closer look at the rust, as it can potentially be repaired, but the extent of the damage will really determine your course of action.

I had rear sections done sills inner & outer suspension point strenghtned it was £3.5k, its good you are checking I would suggest look at as many as possible as rust comes from inside a little bubble can be so much more especially the sills, & the was after someone supposdly did some work,, for £1200, and put filler over rust see from here what i did with mine well the 2nd one, the Cosmos one https://www.mr2oc.co.uk/forum/topic.htm ... &start=140

Dont be in a rush take the time to investigate are you seem to be doing where abouts are you based, hopefully you could find local owners to have a look over a few cars

Welcome aboard & dont be shy asking questions :-)
