I have a 1994 n/a mr2 and only in 3rd gear when down shifting it tends to notch very annoying, im thinking its the 3rd gear synchro? Is there anything else it could be?

Start with your cable bushes as they're the first things to wear-out and the easiest to replace.

Replace the oil in the transmission immediately, it never gets replaced.

The gearbox will last forever if the oil is replaced every 60,000km with Castrol Syntrax 75W-90.

Over 230,000km on mine and no issues at all with shifting.

So abit of an update, ive changed the gear cable bushes (brd bushes) and the gearbox oil, one of the old buses in the centre where it slides over the linkage was oval in shape and had slight play but despite replacing the bushes and changing the gearbox oil there is still the same notchy/crunchy noise it doesn’t sound like a crunch but more a notch only when dropping from 4th to 3rd gear
Im just going to live with the notchy noise

did you check the square bronze bush at the linkage ?

No i need to check that bush where about is this bush located?

look in the bgb its at the gearbox end between the linkages you can rotate it ,rather than replace it.

What is bgb?

also check your front and rear engine mountings, if worn the engine can rock too far and not allow smooth operation of the gear link cables, this can cause notchiness or none selection (if mountings are really worn)
