As per title as I keep getting conflicting suggestions.

depends if it's modified or stock I've a rev 3 tubby modified about to get mapped next week after full rebuild and I'm running 10w50 fully synthetic total quartz racing oil but if stock or light mods probably 10w40 fully synthetic

as long as its fully synth then this is not a problem

5W40 is fine for a stock engine.

It has an apexi air filter, bigger IC, berk downpipe and exhaust with blitz dual solenoid ebc.

But it's stock internally. 5W40 is fine. 10W40 would also be fine.

nothing wrong with 5w40, 10w40 10w50 and 15w50 (latter 2 for more fast road/track).

There is a lot of misunderstanding about what the figures mean.
They are simply parameters of viscosity performance.

Acccording to the OP he has a Blitz Dual Solenoid ebc fitted.
That means he may be running higher than stock boost at some point.
For that reason I wouldn't use anything other than a ester based fully synthetic oil.

Hence the type/quality of the oil has greater relevance than the viscosity index numbers.

I would say it has equal relevance - putting the wrong weight in could trash your bearings because the oil is either too thick or too thin for the clearances.

I never use 5W as it’s just too fine in my humble opinion.

10W 40 at least.

The first number only makes a difference when cold. Given the generally mild climate of the UK, 5W is fine, and IMO preferable in winter.

Correct, I do have a Blitz dual solenoid EBC.

But the “specialist” told me that he couldn’t set it up as it was raining. Then the following day he claimed it was broken and didn’t work at all. However the display seemed to show the rise and fall in boost, it held 13 psi (when the car was running that is) but apparently the solenoids are broken as they don’t make a clicking noise.

I’ve only ever had a couple of EBC’s and tbh have usually used an MBC ball and spring type. So I’m no expert on boost controllers obviously.

No clicking noises from the solenoids???

going a bit off topic here, but if it wasn't working then I would not expect to see 13psi with the stock actuator. To hit 13psi on a stock turbo and actuator, something must be controlling boost.
