Engine warning light on then off

Hi all. I have owned a 1990 mk2 N/A for the past ten years and a couple of months ago decided to buy a 1992 Turbo. All has been fine until today when I started the engine. The amber engine warning light came on after about ten seconds running. I stopped and checked for obvious faults (broken sensor wires etc) but could not find anything obvious so carried on and got home.
I noticed whils't travelling home every time my after market turbo boost pressure went positive the amber light went out, but as soon as I lifted off the throttle it came back on again. Once home I done a diagnostic checkto see what fault codes were stored but there weren't any.
The car runs and performs perfectly but still the fault light comes on when Iam not in positive turbo pressure.
Anyone got any ideas were to start.
Regards Steve.

1992, bring a rev 2 turbo?
In which case check the ecu for blown capacitors as VERY common problem.

Many thanks for your reply. As an electrinic engineer could you point me in the right direction as to what cap to replace. I am confident that I could replace a capacitor, if I knew it's location and value.
Again Many Thanks. Regards Steve.

I wouldn't agree it's a "Very" common problem, I'd say becoming common. Anyway there's no (to my knowledge) particular cap that fails, the problem seems to be down to a few electrolytics that fail. Basically you need to open the Ecu and check the larger electrolytics for leakage or bulging sides/domed tops and if found replace them, values are usually legible on the caps. If you do find a problem with the ECU caps, please post pics, values etc, more documented info is really needed on this type of problem.

Disagree,,, VERY common problem.

In fact its been a problem on many a fb group especially the rev 2 within the last year though it seems to be affecting other revs now too. Try getting hold of a rev 2 turbo ecu these days.

Also loads of posts on many of the forums though they seem to be dying out these days so not posted on as much which is a shame.

Please save my nerves - is this just a turbo problem, or could n/a suffer this same issue. :confused1:

Would a ECU marked 3S-GT 89661-17321 Replace a ECU marked 3S-GT 89661-380

Hi all. Opened the ECU and found 3 leaking electrolitic caps. 2 on the small board and 1 on the larger. Cleaned around the caps with a fibreglass commutator stick and on replacement everything is fine, no warning light.
But tracks on the board are well eaten away, so a replacement will soon be required.
Would a ECU marked 3S-GT 89661-17321 replace mine marked 3S-GT 89661-380.
Does anyone know what the differences are.
Regards Steve.

If it's just the caps and a bit of track damage then your ECU should be repairable by anyone competent in electronics. These threads may help

Without knowing your VIN number I can't cross check properly in the Toyota EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue) which is the correct ECU for your car, however I can say this 89661-17321 is a JDM turbo ECU for 1990-1991 3S-GTE

Image

on the other hand the number you quoted 89661-380 isn't correct, not enough numbers in the second part, when I try it in the EPC I get
"Invalid part number; a part number must contain 10 or 12 digits or letters."

Taking an educated guess it should be 89661-17380 which is a JDM turbo ECU for 1991-1993 3S-GTE

I don't know if the earlier ECU will work in your car, if you PM me your VIN number I'll check which number ECU your car should have.

Find a photo hosting site that allow embedding. Not photobucket.
Then paste the IMG link into the post.

Hi. I have managed to get a Ecu part number 89661-17280. Mine is a part number 89661-17380. Does anyone know if this will replace mine. I am told it’s from jdm 1992 turbo mk2 Rev 2 import which is what mine is, but don’t want to fit it without some info.
Regards Steve
