Introduction

Post by carl1984 » 23/07/18 10:31

Hi All,

New to the forum today - just got my 1995 MR2 T-Bar yesterday (66,000 miles) - but noticed when i got home the power mirrors, cigarette lighter, and central locking weren't working as they should.

Having read through some forums, i have checked the fuse on the drivers kick panel - all good - and the ones at the front of the car - again all good.

Most people are saying the lighter may have just come loose behind it - anyone got any photos of how to check this - or a description of removing the dash to get to the back of it?

Regarding the power windows - do the switches give up on the MR2 or is it possible the wiring is kaput?

For the central locking - this seems a common problem - is it the drivers door switch that controls the central locking - and if so, how easy are these to replace/fix?

Sorry for all the questions - just want the car to work as much as possible.

Thanks in advance for any assistance and look forward to further discussions.

Cheers, Carl :th:

hi and welcome to the OC
know your 2 (KY2) is going to be very helpful for you.

ist thoughts were dome fuse but if you checked that. does the ICE work?, clock?, lighter etc.

Most people are saying the lighter may have just come loose behind it - anyone got any photos of how to check this - or a description of removing the dash to get to the back of it?

Like any 20+ year old electrics yes they can go, also the wires in the door jam can break (door loom)

For the central locking - this seems a common problem - is it the drivers door switch that controls the central locking - and if so, how easy are these to replace/fix?

Hi both,

Thanks for your welcome and peteV6R5 for the information..gives me somewhere to start thanks.

Tried replacing the cigarette lighter this evening for a new generic one..which seemed to smoke/burnout 2 12v usb charger sockets..but the old one didn't do anything.
Would this mean then that there is power going to the cigarette lighter but I should just replace with a straight MR2 replacement?
Apologies if I sound like a noob.
Have also ordered a second hand micro switch for the driver's door and second hand mirror switch.. hopefully arrive in time for the weekend for me to try and sort.
Cheers guys.

Where did you get the car from?

I had the same lighter problem. The original was full of gunk so I replaced with a generic one. The fittings were slightly different so it does not illuminate. Works as a lighter but will not charge anything

hi Andrew1980 - it was from a private seller approx 3.5 hours away from me - i have bought a 12v usb socket off ebay last night and have got a local auto-electrician coming to wire it in and do the door micro switch for me next week at work.

The lighter i bought was a generic one from a local car parts shop - took off the wire for the bulb as i wans't bothered about it lighting up - but literally tried 2 plug in usb chargers and they both started smoking - but the old lighter socket doesn't seem to work (but is properly rusty inside) - but hopefully the auto electrician will get it sorted next week.

Cheers.

Pretty much what happened to me. I only ask as I noticed rev 4 for sale in Bedford on eBay with roughly the same miles and wondered if that was yours. He is a bit of a dodgy seller

Yes that is where i got mine from - a Black 95 T-Bar - he had a few for sale along with some other 90's motors he had restored - seemed like a decent chap - everything else on it is fine and the history is all good - have you had experience with him previously?

He had a White one also for sale on ebay - a 'W' reg - that the guy you mean?

Ta.

At Andrew1980 - the seller is 'makaveli878' - got a few more up on ebay i noticed today.

His feedback was very good hence why i thought he'd be a good choice - but just my luck i spose.

No he is not a nice chap. A few people on here including me have had bad dealings with him. Check behind the carpet in the boot as mine had two large rust holes on the wheel arches. Also properly check the sills wheel arches doors etc for rust, really push your finger into it or a screwdriver. On my car all this had been hidden behind spray paint. All in all it cost me 1400 in a body shop for welding and repaint. His adverts are always almost exactly the same and he says they are his cars but he is prob not on the v5.

You may have been lucky. The last person who brought this up found that his brother had done the mot

I had a lot of mechanical problems in the first year such as 2 caliper replaced. All break pads. Alternator belt, top mount, door speakers, alloys has been repeated badly etc etc. I should have Checked more thoroughly but like many first fun car buyers I wanted my new toy.

If you have been fortunate then it was a really nice looking car. I think black is the best colour and I think the rev 4 has the best looking spoiler
