Front lip and undertray clip fixings

Post by OllieT » 12/10/17 15:54

Lost my front undertrays on the M5 a few months ago and just finally(!) managed to locate a new pair for my 2.

However I still have the problem of the broken clips. I seem to be a very lucky MR2 owner in that all of the bolts are okay, but the clips that attached the undertray to the front lip have all gone, and the small holes in the front lip that they went through have broken.

Dont fancy zip ties, in my experience that never really works. Has anyone any inventive ideas for reattaching my new undertrays to the front lip? Cheers

could do a bit of plastic welding. just put plastic washers behind the holes and weld them on. help to support the original plastic and add a fixing point that is round not split open.

I don't think you're only solving half the issue, Pete. The front bumper (or lip, I forget which) has tabs with holes in protruding inside the car for those kinds of clips to go through. It sounds like OP has found all of them damaged beyond use, meaning there's nothing for those clips to attach to.

I did face this once myself, many years ago, and solved it by separating the bumper and front lip just enough to get some B&Q mirror clips in between to provide a new location to bolt onto. I wouldn't do that again, as I bet they rusted something awful. Mind you, I'm not entirely sure what I would do instead!

Mark, the OP will need to bond something over the holes and redrill to get decent anchorage. but if only slightly damaged, these type of clips clamp, so if the surround is large enough then there should be enough lip left to anchor to. the reason didnt comment on the fix (yeah done it myself on old lip.) is without seeing the damage the fix is not apparent.
these clips are a good starting point.

Yep that is it. The tabs are completely gone, I have some thick plastic washers that I might try and fix/glue onto the broken tabs to provide a new hole and hope that they hold up.

Probably something for next weekend as the new trays wont be delivered for a few days, but Ill be sure to post an update of what I eventually do.

Okay, I know this is an old topic but it may be useful to anyone stumbling across it in the future, as it seems I found a solution that works. I left it a few months to make sure my fix didn't break.. fingers crossed. Handling and high speed front end feel much better after front undertrays properly secured, so definitely recommended over simply leaving them off.

This first pic shows my issue.. the broken tab here usually holds the fixing that secures the front lip to the undertray.

My first plan involved supergluing washers to the tabs in the picture to act as a new mounting point. These didn't last long, not much to my surprise.

So, a new mounting point was needed. The bar that runs across the lip where those tabs are is actually metal, so that can be used to secure a new mounting point to. I made these small brackets below out of aluminium.

And riveted to the metal bar as so. One for each side.

Pop a bolt through the hole, nuts on and jobs a good'un.

Extra nut and liberal anti-seize/corrosion spray to help make them last longer than my last set of tray bolts did. It's worth putting plenty of anti-corrosion copper grease on all of the bolts and washers, makes things a lot easier in the future as I had to drill and retap two holes due to snapped bolts.

Also, if you are finding undertray holes are breaking apart similar to my tabs like mine were, superglue the washers to the undertray first, then add a second washer and bolt. This helps to stop the tightening of the bolt cutting into the plastic undertray.
