Rev 1 import reg as 1998 car
It's been a long while but I'm still looking for the right car to land at my feet. Thought I'd found one last night. Tin top 1998 reg g limited only 1/2 hr from my work place. Went to view and it's got a cracking body but it's a rev 1 on a "s" plate. Log book and vin match but it's definitely a rev 1. Would probably still bought it but just as we returned from a great test drive it started to knock, either small or big end. Gutted really. Going to price up engine build tomorrow but I think it'll cost too much.
Just needed to share this. Cheers lee.

Imports do get the wrong plate sometimes... I think I've seen a 54 plate SW20 once!
A rev1 with a dead engine does not sound like "the right car" if you ask me! But what would I know?

I'm sure you're advice is spot on guys and it's what I'll probably do. It's just down my way we're not spoilt for choice. Especially tin tops, which is what I'd prefer. Good things come to those that wait they say. I thought £500 for a '98 was too good to be true.

A rev1 with a blown/fubared engine is really only worth scrap/parts money in my opinion, only paid £600 for my rev1 and she is sweet as as a nut a year later

You would have seen it if you had made it to the Silverstone track day.

Re: Rev 1 import reg as 1998 car
I've priced up to rebuild the engine and it's not cheap. Parts are quite expensive so I'll be giving it a miss. While I'm back in here can anyone explain exactly why the rev1 has a "dangerous handling" tag attached to it. What exactly did Toyota do to change the set up on the later car. I've driven a rev1 hard and it was prone to brake loose but comming from a mk2 escort background it wasn't a problem for me. Do I need to wait for a good rev3 ? Thanks again lee.

Re: Rev 1 import reg as 1998 car
The tag exists for a few reasons:
1. It was tested by folk who wanted to provoke it (makes nice pics, good story)
2. The OE wheel/tyre spec was too small at the rear.
Later models -- Rev 3 on(?) had a different rear crossmember to take longer swinging arms, which reduces toe in changes under braking, lift off, etc. But whether this actually makes for a better overall package is debatable -- you can accomplish much the same by adjusting a little more toe in.
Depends what you want, really. Any RWD mid engined car is going to be a little feisty around its (generally higher) limits, but you've got to provoke it.
