Popping in a camry v6
Hi guys.
I’m in the process of finally fitting a camery V6 into my mr2 Murcielago.
I have been in touch with both woodsport and rogue about these conversions.
They are both quite expensive to have carried out.
We’re talking around £7k plus.
I’m looking into possably carrying out a conversion myself.
I have access to a ramp and all the correct tools to do the job.
Now if I buy a Mr2 already converted 90% of the work has already been done. So all I need to do is swap engines like for like so all the mechanical stuff is easy peasey.
But there’s one thing that really worries me. The electrics.
I’m good at the mechanical stuff but I’m going to struggle with the wiring.
So the engine and gearbox is fitted into my mr2 Murcielago. What will I need to do electrically wise?
Will I have to completely swap over the wiring looms from the V6 mr2 to my lambo?
Any tips would be great.

Re: Popping in a camry v6
Not done a swap myself so can't say how easy it would be but...
If you think about the car electrics as two parts. The engine needs inputs and has outputs to go to and from the ECU. This is handled by the engine loom that comes with the engine and the ECU used is the Camry one.
The other part of the electrics is the body loom. This takes outputs from the ECU to the dash like oil pressure and tacho. Now the mr2 also needs these signals so all the wires are already there, just not necessarily in the right place. This would mean you will have to repin the body loom plug to get the engine to talk with the car via the ECU.
Also I believe you can use the mr2 gearbox.

Just put in a fully rebuilt Forged 3SGTE. Just don't see the point in going for a V6 myself. I could elaborate but probably no point. Would probably start with the question "Is the Toyota Camry a sports car ?"

He's not going to be driving a Camry tho.
I'm guessing the v6 noise is something more appealing than the 3sgte to.

Re: Popping in a camry v6
was going to say same thing Dave
which camry you got? 3vzfe or 1mzfe?
Both will mate up to existing gearbox.
You will need a flywheel that suits as camrys are auto.
Paul does a loom service (convert camry loom to fit MR2 fusebox / and loom).
you will need engine mount driver side (paul can supply).
Then is more about working through logically and asking for help if you have a problem before doing a heath robinson job with the problem.
Not done mine myself but loads on here have done their own.

Re: Popping in a camry v6
It depends which engine your getting 3vz or 1mz and vvti or no vvti. All make a difference on how hard it is to fit.
The wiring loom can be bought from Paul Woods if your unsure on doing it yourself. I would say if you can solder and use a multimeter then you can probably manage it.
With regards to V6 Vs 3sgte, my friend has sunk 10k into forging his 3sgte and my V6 will still kick his "censored" off the line, once the turbo kicks in its a different story though.
The V6 also sounds better and gets much better fuel economy.
I love my V6 and think it makes a better all round engine if your driving alot.

Re: Popping in a camry v6
Hi guys.
Thanks for your comments.
To make my life as easy as possible I would only ever buy a already converted V6 mr2.
I’ve now got to find a good one. Gulp!
My only reason for the V6 is only the sound and smoothness.
The mr2 turbo is a cracking engine performance wise but just doesn’t sound right in a lambo.

Re: Popping in a camry v6
As expected you guys missed the point.
Take the Camry for a test drive and if you go WOW this engine would go really well in a sports car then do it.
My point is that a Camry is not a sports car so the engine in it was NOT DESIGNED to have the characteristic of a sports car engine.
If you happy with the "Noise" and characteristic of the V6 then great, no problem.

Funny that Lotus thought enough of the 2GR to use a variation of it in the evora, when it wasn't designed as a "sports car engine"

Nope, you missed the point. The engine does not make the car. Yes the Camry is dull but its a cracking engine in the MR2 that gives the 3SGTE a run for its money stock for stock.MR2DI4 wrote: ↑20/09/18 22:10 As expected you guys missed the point.

Re: Popping in a camry v6
Wow...Some things never change eh?
The Camry is a dull car, it's soft, heavy, the auto box isn't the best....Basically it's a lazy cruiser. BUT, the engine was designed to carry that "luxury" with ease. Strip it out, pair it to a well ratio'd manual gearbox (5th gear mod is well worth it) and place in the middle of a lighter, more nimble machine and that lazy power suddenly has a LOT less work to do. End result is a very intoxicating drive, bag loads of torque and an eager to please power delivery that perfectly suits the layout of the mr2.
Don't confused a dull car with a dull engine
Anyway, back on topic, if you are getting a complete donor MR2, then in theory you should be able to switch the body looms across as well provided it is from a same revision car. Even if it isn't, I THINK that the only switch you might need to make is with regards to the electronic speedo sender wire.
I would start with swapping everything and work from there
