Re: Have I bought a dud??
It would be a perfect car for an engine upgrade, but as you can imagine I've lost interest right now and just want rid.

Re: Have I bought a dud??
Sorry to hear your thinking of selling it already, there are good cars out there.
At risk of teaching you to suck eggs, how did you clean the MAf?
You need a dedicated cleaner for it and be carefull not to touch the sensor wire, any residue will cause it to read bad.
I have used residue free electronic contact cleaner in the past. just spray it on without touching.

Re: Have I bought a dud??
I did it properly with proper MAF cleaner, and did it using a YouTube guide. Didn't touch anything I shouldn't.
The car actually drove okay for about 15mins until the 02 sensor code and EML reappeared. If it was just a case of changing the sensor I'd do it, but it's smoking bad enough for me to worry.
I can't advertise as a non-paying member so keep your eyes peeled on eBay for any cheap MR2's in Staffordshire! It's got freshly refurbed black wheels with brand new Avon tyres, and a hardtop in good condition... And it's silver!

I'm glad you got it sorted mate.
This couldn't have come at a worse time for me really because I was on the verge on giving up on cars after buying a string of cars I wasn't satisfied with, and now I've bought the worst one of all lol.

Re: Have I bought a dud??
Got to ask why you are not taking it back if you bought it as you said from a dealer?

It wasn't a dealer... He's a tradesman but not in cars. I used the term dodgy dealer because I can't swear on the forum lol. I've considered legal action against him but I don't think it would be worthwhile.

Re: Have I bought a dud??
If the car drives ok apart from the engine then can you consider a reconditioned engine or sourcing a 2nd hand one?
That way you would end up with a good car that you can have faith in?
If you sell this on at a loss then you could still end up buying another one with problems.
Which part of the country are you in as there are some mr2 specialists about?

Re: Have I bought a dud??
I'm in Staffordshire... I paid £1650 for the car including the hardtop. It's not immaculate but it's surprisingly good for its age. It has red leather and freshly refurbished wheels with new Avon tyres. It also has new discs and pads all round. It's a 2003 facelift.
Any idea what it's worth as drivable car with what I'd describe as a screwed engine? I was toying with selling the hardtop and getting what I can for the car.

Re: Have I bought a dud??
It is to be fair. What are they worth once converted? It's about a £3k job at a specialist isn't it? So for approximately £4,650 or so I'd have a freshly 2ZZ'd fascelift.

Re: Have I bought a dud??
The hardtop and fitting kit could recoup some of the outlay.
I would give these guys a ring to see what options they suggest,

...Interesting!
Do these guys have a decent reputation? The only place anyone else has suggested up to yet is Rogue Motorsport near Rugby.

Re: Have I bought a dud??
Mrtwos doesn’t do engine conversions however I’d recommend him to do any other maintenance required
The 2zz is a home conversion, the last one I did was driven into my place as 1zz in the morning and back on my mates drive at about 6pm as 2zz
