After market oil gauges - Rev 3 tubby - Best way to fit

Post by MR2Jay »

Hey Guys - been thinking about fitting my after market gauges and suddenly realised the I don't know the best way to fit the sensors on the Rev 3 tubby engine....

Boost I am fine with (I'll replace the one already fitted) it is the oil temp and oil pressure gauge sensors I'm not sure where to plumb in....

So, ideas please guys :th: I would like to avoid using a sandwich plate if possible. I have a custom sump plug I can fit the temp one in but if there is a better method for both then I am all ears :th:

Basically there are three 3/8" BSP threaded plugs in the rev3 turbo lower oil pan that are perfect post-filter locations for the sensors.

Two of these plugs and a little PTFE tape will sort it out for you: http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p3275 ... _info.html

I found the plugs initially were a PITA to shift, so expect to use a torque wrench and an extension or two on the male-hex socket to get them shifted. (Hope you've got a decent size socket set, as an allen key probably isn't going to work on this one)

Now THAT is handy to know :th:

With it being effectively in the sump area, is it still possible to take the oil pressure from there?

Just knocked together this image to show you where:

The oil feed comes directly form the filter, so the temperature and pressure should be directly comparable to the sandwich plate readings :th:

lol, you don't have oil pressure from the sump plug Mick!

Besides, the sump isn't a great location for the temperature reading:
d-peg wrote:I think what Mark means is reading from the sump is not necessarily what the engine is seeing. It has to go through the pick up, compressed by the pump. pushed through a hot engine block and so on. The real reading will be from the pressurised side :th:
That said, the oil gallery is a better place to read pressure from. I only decided to put my pressure reading into the oil pan so I could compare oil pressure before and after installation of an oil cooler when previously the sensor had been on a sandwich plate. A T-piece with braided hose put into the stock pressure sensor location would arguably give a better warning if the engine started to lose oil pressure.

Not that the sandwich plate / oil pan is a bad place to read the pressure - it sure as anything beats the sump plug :laughing

 Mick.....no you dont have it in the sump plug.

I have a sandwich plate, but now seeing Shins post I may move my sensors over and bin the plate. It pushes the oil filter down onto the undertray.

Thanks guys :th:

So, buy a couple of those plugs and I am ready to go :th: Looks fairly accessible as well :yh:

So glad I went for a rev3 now ;) So much easier in so many ways

I'm at little new at the modding scene as can be seen from my questions but could someone explain why I should or shouldn't use a mishimoto themostat sandwich plate to put a oil cooler on to my car, I was going to t piece a pressure sensor and a temp sensors in?

Thanks jay for reminding me this?
Mr2 G limited (gt-s engine) broken but fun
Mr2 uk 156 bhp - in bits
Mr2 gt 170bhp - with the parents

They're pretty handy plugs, those... and aren't on the rev2 engine :th:

They're ok to get to, although a universal joint and a long socket extension will be very handy to actually apply torque to them to get them undone, but you don't need to get under the car or anything...

Thermostatic sandwich plate it great. You can't T a temperature sensor off tho - it needs to be in the oil flow to read accurately. But if you have a rev3, just use the plugs shown above and don't add any extra complexity with T-pieces in the oil cooler lines. Besides, the entire point of a thermostatic plate is it DOESN'T send all the oil to the cooler, making any readings taken from those lines absolutely useless!

The issue I have found with sandwich plates is that you are introducing an extra mechanical seal into the oil system and therefore another possible leaking point.

I have tried to fit one to a rev2 engine before and due to the location of the oil filter, it is almost impossible to seal this properly to the engine....

So, due to past experience I try to avoid them like the plague
