Is a V8 MR2 MK2 still an MR2?

Is a V8 MR2 MK2 still an MR2?
Not a technical question, but a question all the same.
I've been reading the forums recently and get a mixed reaction.
Would the MR2 community still consider a V8 inside and MR2 still a V8? I'd be interested to see the consensus. Some people thinks it would ruin it, some people think its still the same blood.
Ta!

But if nots a Toyota V8? Maybe - hypothetically - a Rover or Audi V8?

In my opinion, you can stick any engine in any car and the car would still go by its original name. You just mention that it runs such & such engine.
A Toyota V8 in an MR2 makes good sense, if you're a purest. However you also have to think of it from an engineering point of view.
Paul Woods used an Audi V8 in his Mk1 due to it being lighter & more compact and therefore easier from an engineering point of view due to the limited space in a Mk1.
It's all down to what you want at the end of the day, not what other people think

If it looks like an MR2, goes like an MR2, logic says it is an MR2
You may come across the purist out their that refute a VAG engine in a Toyota, but stuff 'em I say. I've got the same engine in one of mine as Pete, love it, and that wasn't in an MR2 from the factory
My car. My engine. My decision. Anyone else's opinion counts for....?
.......Nothing.

As for a V8 MR2, if it says MR2 in the logbook then its an MR2.
If the half hearted purists don't like the fact that its not a Toyota V8 that's their problem. Tbh an engine swap is an engine swap so they don't really have a worthwhile opinion on the matter in my view.
The true purists will stick to the original engines and spec, all power to them.

Re: Is a V8 MR2 MK2 still an MR2?
The question arises i believe because of a misperception applied by people when they consider a non standard engine type or manufacturers product being used in place of the original stuff.
However, theres several intsances of manufacturers using each others engines in their cars,- toyota aygo, pug 107 etc, citroen c1,(all the same) toyota and subaru stuffing each others bits into their cars- does that make it any less valid to put an engine from a different maker in your car yourself?
Nope not to my mind, its perfectly reasonable to use whatever engine you want, the only thing youll find is interchangeability/accesibility will suffer, sometimes very badly.
Its always nice to open the bay up and see the makers name on the engine inside but its not written in stone that such transplanting shall not be done.
If its done well then whats not to like?

Re: Is a V8 MR2 MK2 still an MR2?
Thanks nice to have some specific opinions. When you get to a car like an MR2, and like a lot of classics, some people turn their nose up when you make too drastic changes. I like the idea of a V8 MR2 and even though its changed considerably, so it pretty much retains nothing but the chassis, body and suspension, I reckon if you retain the handling characteristics and the entire exterior body shape then why would it not be an MR2? Sure its probably financially a poor choice but it would be pretty cool. Who knows, maybe someone is just about to complete one and wants to know whether he would be shunned if he came out...

Re: Is a V8 MR2 MK2 still an MR2?
This is a race car from back in the mid 90's
Now ... it's clearly for a LOT of MR2 DNA in it but it was called the MC8-R ... so I would say no . a V8 in an MR2 does not make an MR2
But then i would challenge anyone to say "no, you cannot bring that on the MR2 club stand"
